When it comes to the Divergent trilogy, I am a pretty huge fan. I've got the signed books, I write fanfiction, I even walked the red carpet at the European premiere of the movie, so to hear that, after Veronica ripped my heart to shreds, there would be a companion novel to the series - I was pretty excited.
Despite this, my hopes were not that high, part of me was concerned that we would have Allegiant levels of sadness, fortunately, on both counts, I was wrong.
I really enjoyed this book. For the first two stories we got the same initiation vibes we did with Divergent and I loved that. I have such fond memories of Tris' initiation, that having Tobias endure the same thing felt almost like a comfort zone to me, ironically, I felt safe.
But of course, my favourite story was the one where we have Tris, we got almost all of my favourite scenes from the first book from the point of view of Tobias. Despite reading countless fanfictions of the same thing, it was great to read what the author thought Tobias felt, not some 13 year old sitting in their bedroom daydreaming's opinion.
If you are the kind of person who found Tobias annoying in Allegiant, you will think differently here, personally, I didn't find him annoying in the slightest; he was acting like any one of us would should we be in his shoes.
It wasn't perfect, but it gave me a nice sense of closure, which I didn't have after I was destroyed by Allegiant. I really hope Veronica continues to write novels because she is honestly one of my biggest writing inspirations, her style is one of my favourites out of any author, YA or not.
