Not only is Mia a talented chelloist but she has a 'pop-punk' boyfriend who was brought to her in the form of a clique 'music room high school romance' only it wasn't too clique or in any way cheesy. Adam made me want my own pop-punk, band member, black jeans and guitar around his neck boyfriend, I loved their relationship and that the flaws in it were highlighted. I feel like in some contemporary ( if that's what you categorise this as? ) novels the ups and downs of relationships are sugar coated where as this wasn't. It was real and heart warming. I also enjoyed reading Adam's struggle as he begged for Mia to stay with him but also understood that she didn't have much to wake up to. The same went for Mia's grandparents: her grandfather was supportive but honest. I could feel the pain with him and all the emotions that came with it and certainly felt myself choking up at some points.
If I stay has helped me, like most stressed teenagers I have often wondered what is the point, why should I keep trying when the future is so uncertain? but this book showed me that we all have these sick feelings when we wonder just why we try. I saw myself in Mia and could find relatable situations in each of her dilemmas and this has helped me out a lot. I wasn't expecting it but this book had more effect on me then any counsellors, it surprised me: moved me.
My only problem with this book is that it was very short. Although the length worked and it kept it fresh I felt like I read it too quickly even though it's supposed to be read that way as that's just how life plays out.
I'm currently reading the companion novel ' where she went ' and I'll be reviewing that next week. Now we have the movie to look forward to! I'm not a massive fan of Chole Mortez but I will wait and see, as much as I want to see it I don't want my perception of the book to change because of it.
You can find the trailer over on the book to movie adaptation page, oh and can I just say how much the model on the cover looks like Lily Collins?
And happy birthday for yesterday Katniss! ( although it's set in the future so she isn't technically alive yet ),
See you next week and Happy Reading!
