This week I’ve chosen to review ‘Take back the skies’, by Lucy Saxon, a book which I received a week before its official publication date thanks to a competition hosted by Bloomsbury. I have also uploaded a review onto my youtube channel (‘michellemellark’ –https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWcgq47rTWeXLvyAruLymg), so it would be great if you could check that out alongside this!
The first thing I would like to highlight is something I mention alot in my video, although it does feel necessary. Lucy is only nineteen years old and wrote the book when she was sixteen. Honestly, I really look up to her and cannot wait to meet her at comic con (more details under ‘events’) in July! Being avid readers, our little group here on thebookbubble are aspiring authors, therefore to see someone in a similar position to us (aka a general internet person), accomplishing something so huge, gives us a sense of hope.
In addition to this, I adore the protagonist. This is yet another thing I mention over and over again in my video, yet this too feels necessary. Cat is, like us, a fourteen-year old girl. This completely overwrites the stereotype of a ‘hero’ being a muscular young man, and I think the idea itself deserves a moments appreciation. I also felt as though the other characters-for example, Matt and Ben – brought a more light-hearted feel to the book and had a lovely presence.
Take back the skies has a gripping beginning, although I found it difficult to become engrossed in the book. This was, however, due to the fact that I was suffering from a severe ‘book hangover’, thanks to ‘soulmates’ by Holly Bourne. The book itself was wonderfully written, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading every word of it! It is also the first book in what I’ve heard is to be a series, so pick up your copy either in stores or online.
Congratulations, Lucy Saxon, you’ve written something you should be well and truly proud of!
