The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden - Jonas Jonasson
"The statistical probability that an illiterate in 1970's Soweto will grow up and one day find herself confined in a potato truck with the Swedish king and prime minister is 1 in 45,766,212,810. This, according to the calculations of the aforementioned illiterate herself."
First of all I want to that Goodreads for having a giveaway section, otherwise I would have never read this book. I won a copy of The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden and I am so glad that I did. I would have never normally read this book as it is an adult book. I mainly requested it because of the beautiful cover!
The book mainly follows a girl called Nombeko who is such a wonderful character. She has an amazing personality which shines through. The one thing I did not expect from this book was humor. It's a serious adult book for adults, why would it have humor? But it did. Nombeko full of sarcastic comments and thoughts that made the book such a pleasure to read. The story was so incredible that it could have been unbelievable if it wasn't for the beautifully crafted people who make this book.
"All these people found themselves in nuclear-weapons-free Sweden. Right next door to a three-megaton bomb."
The style of writing cannot be faulted. The bizarre-ness of the situation became entirely believable at the hands of Joanasson. By the end of the book I was wondering whether this actually happened . The slightly sarcastic sense of the book amazed me. Never was it annoying but always balanced. The book is the most unique piece of writing I think I will ever encounter, it has opened my eyes to a different world of words.
It took me a surprising amount of time to read this - about a week. The thing is I just didn't want it to end! I was so reluctant for the tale to be over and to no longer wonder how everything would end. I have never read a book by Jonas Jonasson before but I will definitely be reading the other book of his! I cannot recommend this book enough, even if you are scared of reading adult books it is well worth a try!
